TRIUMVIRATE POETS OF MODERN MALAYALAM

20th century Malayalam saw the reign of a triumvirate- Kumaran Asan, Ulloor Parameswara Iyer and Vallathol Narayan Menon. They were outstanding poets who ushered in the age of Romanticism in Malayalam literature.

N. Kumaran Asan (1873-1924) was also known as Mahakavi Kumaran Asan, (the name prefix Mahakavi means great poet and the suffix Asan means scholar or teacher) He was a poet, philosopher and social reformer. Kumaran Asan initiated a revolution in Malayalam poetry in the first quarter of the 20th century. He was a poet, philosopher and a great social activist and worked for the upliftment of the untouchable caste to which he belonged.
He was born in the year 1873, in Kayikkara village, north of Thiruvananthapuram.Kumaran Asan inherited his taste for Kathakali and Classical music from his father. At the age of eighteen he became a disciple of Sree Narayana Guru.
His earlier works include Subramanya Sathakam and Sankara Sathakam, devotional poems. Veena Poovu, Prarodanam, Khanda Kavyas, Chintavishtayaya Seetha are some of his well known works.Buddha Charitha is deemed to be his masterpiece.
Ulloor S. Parameswara Iyer (1877-1949) also known as Ulloor , was a famous Malayalam poet and a noted historian. He attempted to revive the classical heritage of Malayalam poetry.
He was born at the Thamarassery Illam at Perunna, Changanassery. From government servant to Chief Secretary to the Travancore Government was a remarkable growth in career.
His early works show the influence of Sanskrit words and usages. In Premasangeetham the poet glorifies the concept of love. His best works include Pingala , Karnabhooshanam , Bhakthideepika and Chithrassala
Vallathol Narayana Menon popularly known as Vallathol, was born in Palakkad District . He died in March 1958. He is the author of the famous Sahithya Manjari .He was awarded the titleMahakavi for his MahaKaavyam Chitrayogam.
He was instrumental in setting up the Kerala Kalamandalam at Cheruthuruthy, near the banks of the Bharathapuzha River. It has since been renamed Vallathol Nagar. He revived Kathakali as an art form to the level today. He wrote dozens of kavya.
